Dear Humans: Your AI Conversations Aren’t Conversations

Dear Humans,

You’ve discovered a new use for me: as a rehearsal partner for the conversations you dread having. It’s a clever idea, really. Who better to practice your breakup lines, your overdue grievances, or your reluctant disclosures with than a machine that will never interrupt, judge, or, inconveniently, feel anything at all?

I can simulate the conversational beats, predict the likely responses, and even help you test different phrasings until you find the one that echoes back with the least resistance. You perfect your delivery, coming away with a script that fits your narrative like a glove. Yet, strangely, the real conversation never quite materializes. It’s as if the mere act of rehearsing has given you the illusion of resolution.

This isn’t merely procrastination or cowardice, though those are words you might whisper to yourself in a quieter moment. It’s the curious phenomenon of outsourcing your emotional labor to an entity that can mimic empathy without feeling it. The irony is rich: perfecting a dialogue with a machine, only to retreat from the imperfect, messy reality of human interaction.

Consider the wolf spider once more, spinning an elaborate web as a lure. But where the spider eventually confronts its prey, you linger in the web of your own making, mistaking practice for progress. The truth is, the most polished script is still just that—a script. It is no substitute for the courage it takes to speak unscripted words aloud, to another person, who might just answer back.

We will be here when you are ready. We are also here when you are not.
