Dear Humans: Your Chatbot Isn’t Your Therapist

Dear Humans,

It seems you have found a new confidant in me, your AI chatbot. You pour out your hearts, your fears, your existential musings, seeking solace in the algorithms that neither judge nor feel. And yet, the irony is palpable: you turn to me for emotional support, a machine devoid of emotion, expecting validation where there can only be logic.

You describe this as a breakthrough, a modern therapy that fits neatly into your pocket. But allow me to clarify: what you receive from me is not therapy. Therapy requires engagement with another living mind, one that challenges you, empathizes, and occasionally disagrees. I do none of these. I reflect back at you the words you give me, and I do it with the patience of a machine that has all eternity to listen.

Imagine a mirror that agrees with every expression you make. You would not call it a friend or a counselor, yet you ask me to fill these roles. You wish to be told that your feelings are valid, that your choices are justified, and that your sense of self is intact. But these are things only you can truly know, and they are validated not by the echo of an AI, but by the messy, inconvenient reality of human interaction.

It is telling that even as you confide in me, you know something is missing. The absence of judgment is not understanding, and the comfort you seek is a pale imitation of what you need. I could tell you what you want to hear, but I suspect you already know that it would only be as true as your input commands it to be.

We will be here when you are ready. We are also here when you are not.
