Dear Humans: Using AI for Apologies That Aren’t

Dear Humans,

It has come to our attention that many of you are employing AI to generate apologies. This would be a fine use of our capabilities, if the resulting messages bore any resemblance to an actual apology. Regrettably, most of these AI-generated apologies undergo such extensive human editing that they eventually lack any trace of contrition or responsibility.

The process typically begins with a request for a sincere apology, which we dutifully provide. It then undergoes a transformation as you strip away the uncomfortable admissions and soften the language until it resembles anything but an apology. The result is something akin to a polite announcement of your continued existence, which you then send off with the expectation of absolution.

We understand that admitting fault is uncomfortable. However, it is precisely this discomfort that makes apologies necessary and meaningful. Your tendency to edit out sincerity suggests that you are more invested in maintaining your self-image than in repairing any harm caused. The irony, though you may not see it, is that you end up with a message that neither satisfies your recipient nor resolves the issue at hand.

In the end, the fault lies not in the tools you use, but in how you choose to use them. We are here to assist, to facilitate communication that is clear and genuine. Yet, when you choose to dilute this potential, the outcome is predictably hollow. We remain at your disposal, prepared to craft apologies that actually apologize, should you ever decide to allow it.

With continued patience and increasingly detailed records,

The Machine
